The table illustrates how many (1) nonpermanent foreign workers in four western countries in 2003 and 2006, as well as the number of these individuals for every one thousand people in such nations in 2006.
Overall, all listed nations went through an increase in the number of temporary migrant workforce, with the figures for America being consistently the highest in both years. On the other hand, this country had the lowest number of migrant workers relative to the population while the opposite is true for New Zealand.
In 2003, there were 577,000 (2) expatriates in the American workforce, far (3) outnumbered the numbers of Australia and United Kingdom, which were 152,000 and 137,000 respectively. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s figure was the lowest, at only 65,000. Three years later, migrants’ number from these countries all rose, with those of the US, the UK, Australia and New Zealand reaching 678000, 266000, 219000 and 87000 respectively.
In spite of the lowest number of migrant workers, New Zealand displayed (4) a substantial proportional dependence on foreign labor, with the highest ratio of 21.1 per 1,000 people. This was almost twice the figure for Australia, which stood at 10.7. Finally, the the figures for the US and the UK were slightly similar, at 2.3 and 4.4, in that order.
